OH.1
Drawing from The Yellow Book

Lecturers: Jim Croke and David Horton

Locations: Sydney Opera House and NAS Building 11 Sculpture studios

As the title implies the drawings for this workshop are to be exclusively about and of the Sydney Opera House.

Where? Meet under the steps of the Sydney Opera House near the box office area. It is undercover so if it is raining it won't be a problem. We have been given permission to draw at the northern boardwalk (the outdoor area behind the concert hall) and the box office podium (outdoors at the top of the stairs). The range of our wanderings is to be restricted to the general precinct of the Sydney Opera House. This could include viewpoints from as far as the Botanic Gardens. There will also be the opportunity to explore the incredible forms that are created by the architecture.

The Plan. We will do Tuesday and Wednesday on site at the Sydney Opera House, then return to NAS to further develop the sketches into substantial drawings. On site the scale will be small and materials limited to what can be carried. Upon return to NAS (we will use the First Year Sculpture Studios, Building 11) larger, more varied and ambitious work can be attempted. You may prefer to work on a series of smaller works making a suite. Either way the extension work should push the boundaries of what you know.

Approaches. Gather as much visual information as you can while on site. Try and discover what aspects of the building you respond to. Draw them with a view to exploring your unique viewpoint. If you work hard and consistently you will have ample resources to expand upon when back in the studio at NAS.

Practicalities. You will need block-out, a hat and appropriate clothing to protect you from the heat. Bring plenty of drinks and food as prices in the city are always at a premium. Drawing equipment which is of a manageable size is recommended. That does not mean that your paper is so small as to be useless. A3 is best if you can manage it. Perhaps use better quality paper back at NAS when developing your work. Boards and paper should not be too large. Small chairs will help if you have difficulty working on the ground. No wet materials should be used on site at the Sydney Opera House.  Even charcoal will have to be used judiciously – we suggest graphite might be best for the initial studies.

All students must arrive on time at 9:30am each day to be regarded as present. All students must sign out at the end of each day.
